DANCE workshop
with Thomas Hauert

For professional dancers: Workshop with Thomas Hauert

Monday 4 through Friday 8 November 2019

at the Centre Chorégraphique National d’Orléans

“Our consciousness can only focus on a few elements at a time, while our body is able to combine a large amount of information in a fluid, evolving and creative direction. To invent unusual patterns of coordination rather than recreate patterns already recorded in our bodies, participants will use their physical intuition and the creativity that arises from purely physical circumstances. Through improvisation with one or more partners and by exchanging information through touch, this phenomenon will be tapped to create forms, rhythms and movement qualities that are much more sophisticated than our minds could ever imagine.

“Another element of the workshop will lead to participants exploring the development of an improvised group choreography that takes place without the intervention of a central authority. We will experiment with an integrated, dynamic system of unpredictable behaviour, in which participants initiate a movements and others react to it, this reaction triggering another movement within the same structure or initiating a whole new development. Drawing freely from a shared repertoire of previously incorporated physical principles, participants will be responsible for inventing and executing their own movement, but also for creating and developing group structures. They must adapt their individual roles within a dynamic constellation of constantly changing mechanisms. The process resembles a game, a team sport where there are game rules and basic principles (touching the ball with the body except for the arms, collaborating to put the ball in the opponent’s goal…) but everything else, each match is improvised.”
