Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (°1960) a fondé la compagnie de danse Rosas en 1983. Son travail chorégraphique explore inlassablement les liens entre danse et musique, et s’affronte aux structures musicales et aux partitions de toutes les époques, de la musique ancienne à la musique contemporaine en passant par les expressions populaires. Sa pratique puise en outre dans les principes formels de la géométrie, de l’étude des phénomènes naturels et des structures sociales, ouvrant de singulières perspectives sur le déploiement du corps dans l’espace et le temps.

Le minimalisme de ses débuts, nourri de complexité musicale, a peu à peu cédé la place à de flamboyantes constructions pour grands ensembles dansés. En 2007, le travail de la chorégraphe prend cependant un tour nouveau : un « minimalisme second », qui ne revient sur son lieu de départ qu’à une place inattendue. Dépouillement et grand air, simplicité et valorisation énergétique des gestes élémentaires – la marche, le souffle, le parler – reconfigurent la dynamique du simple et du complexe et relancent son écriture.

Les photographes Anne Van Aerschot et Herman Sorgeloos ont été les témoins privilégiés de ce processus. À travers leurs images, réunies dans un seul et même ouvrage pour la première fois depuis dix ans, ils délivrent un regard d’une acuité exceptionnelle sur cette dernière décennie de l’aventure Rosas.

At the occasion of The Six Brandenburg Concertos De Munt/La Monnaie and Rosas invited dance photographer Hugo Glendinning to attend the rehearsals in Brussels and to travel to New York City for the work’s US premiere at the Park Avenue Armory. His photographs masterfully reveal both the personality of each individual dancer and the idea of a clan, a company made up, for The Six Brandenburg Concertos, of several generations of dancers – some bringing to this new work all their experience with the choreographer, others undertaking such an ambitious project for the first time with Rosas.

This booklet is of an untimely date: it was written and produced amidst the process of making the performance Vortex Temporum, two months before the premiere. Hence, rather than attempting to interpret an unfinished work, its aim is to zoom into the creation of a piece after two two-month working periods between September 2012 and July 2013, during which the course was firmly set, and out of which a choreography now begins to loom.

At the same time, the moment is opportune to renew the tradition of generous program notes, which enable an audience to further engage with the work. This booklet is therefore an attempt to unfold the multiple voices that make up the creation of this performance: De Keersmaeker, whose interview sets out the poetical ideas and construction principles that guide the process; Georges-Elie Octors, the conductor of Ictus Ensemble, who, besides conducting Vortex, taught the dancers to analyze Grisey’s music; Jean-Luc Plouvier, a pianist and one of the artistic leaders of Ictus Ensemble, whose various approaches/perspectives and roles are discussed; and the dancers, interviewed in the middle of the creation process. Additionally unfolding some of the performance’s elemental materials, like notes from Grisey’s reflections on musical time or from St. Augustine’s or Henri Bergson’s philosophical conceptions of time, this publication is a notebook from the making-of, a document of the ideas and techniques in their process of becoming, and ultimately producing Vortex Temporum.

À l'occasion de l'exhibition Work/Travail/Arbeid, WIELS, Rosas et Fonds Mercator ont publié un catalogue en quatre volumes. Les deux premiers volumes introduisent Work/Travail/Arbeid et retracent les préparatifs du projet, les deux derniers explorent plus en profondeur l’exposition même. Le catalogue comprend une réédition du programme de salle original de Vortex Temporum, la documentation photographique par Babette Mangolte, Herman Sorgeloos et Anne Van Aerschot, des dessins d’Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, et de nouveaux essais par Douglas Crimp, Bojana Cvejić, Brian Dillon, André Lepecki et Catherine Wood.
